Open MUS File

MUS extension files represent various uses, all of a musical nature, but with various applications, namely:

Finale Notation File

A MUS file is a music notation file saved in MIDI format and created by Finale, a music notation and editing program.

The MUS format in this application is proprietary closed type, which means that the music notation data and additional information can only be read by the MakeMusic software.

The MUS files were consequently replaced by the MUSX files.

Electronic Arts Game Music File

In this case, MUS files are of the audio file type used by Electronic Arts games, specifically for the PlayStation 2 (PS2), PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PC platforms.

MUS files save audio data for the game's soundtrack and are used to play background music.

The NFSMW Music Extractor program can convert NFSMW MUS files into other music audio files.

Minecraft Music File

The background music played during the Minecraft game is saved in a MUS file extension.

Minecraft is a 3D sandbox type construction game. In this case the MUS files can also store the music played by the in-game Music Discs.

The versatility of MUS files, for Minecraft, allows audio to be stored, both in Vorbis OGG format, and in proprietary encoding that cannot be read by standard audio players.

Through the Java encoded tool called muscode.jar, Minecraft MUS files can be converted to the OGG format.
