Open GLB File
GLB files have three different types of format and use, namely:
STK Globe
In this use, a GLB file is a file used by STK, a program used to model and operate missions for space, defense systems, and electronic systems.
Systems Tool Kit (STK) is a platform to analyze and visualize complex defense and aerospace systems, to interact within planned missions communicating the results with reports, graphics and impressive 3D animations.
The STK format stores a globe, which is a simulated or real-world 3D terrain model, and is used to share globes with other STK users, importing or exporting using the STK Globe Manager component.
GLB files can also be uploaded to a Globeserver, which hosts the files for multi-user access.
Glulx Blorb Game
In this section, GLB files are a type of game file created in the Glulx Blorb format.
Basically GLB is a format used to group different game resource files into a single file.
The GLB can contain graphics, level information, music, or other data.
The GLB file is used by games like DemonStar, a vertically scrolling shooter that takes place in outer space.
Binary GL Transmission
In this use, a GLB file contains a 3D model saved in the GL Streaming Format (glTF).
This file stores information about a 3D model, such as the hierarchy of nodes, cameras and materials, animations and meshes in binary format.
Importantly, GLB files are the binary version of GLTF files.
GLB files can be used to save and share digital assets between different 3D modeling tools, similar to DAE files.
GLB files are similar to GLTF files in that they can include embedded resources or they can reference external resources.
A GLB file may represent one of the following formats:
- BIN Binary Files - One or more BIN files that contain animation, geometry, and other data.
- GLSL shader files - One or more GLSL files that contain shaders.
- JPG, PNG, etc image files: One or more files that contain textures for the 3D model.
The glTF, and consequently the GLB file, is an efficient, extensible and
interoperable format for the transmission and loading of 3D content.
