ACT extension files present various applications of a different nature, as follows, categorized according to the software that uses it:

CAD/CAM core

In this section, the ACT file is a CAD document created by Alma's CAD/CAM software products including Combi, Punch, Routing and Cut.

The ACT file contains CAD/CAM data and instructions suitable for 3D cutting machines or, even, welding robots.

Such an ACT file can incorporate laser, plasma, waterjet and flame technologies.

DS Game Maker

Here, the ACT file serves as the file used by DS Game Maker, a game development tool for the Nintendo DS.

In this case, ACT contains a game action written in C, and is used to display graphics, play sounds, create transitions, and control game logic, and any actions related to game.

It is important to know that custom actions saved to an ACT file can be created from the templates provided in the DS Game Maker Action Editor interface.

ACT files are stored in the actions directory of the DS Game Maker installation, and have a corresponding ACTX extension file associated with them

ACTX contains a description of the action, which is saved in the same directory than ACT.

Adobe Photoshop

In this application, the ACT file is a color lookup table file used by Adobe Photoshop, an application used for editing raster graphics.

The ACT stores a collection of predefined colors, and is used to CLUT (Color Look-Up Table) an image in the 'Save for Web' dialog in Photoshop.

ACT files are used to optimize images for publication on the web.

Adobe Color Tables can be loaded into the Save for Web dialog box by selecting the Color Table menu and choosing Load Color Table, using ACT files.

Genesis3D

In this section, the ACT file is a three-dimensional character, saved in the Genesis 3D format.

Genesis3D is an open source real-time 3D rendering engine that is primarily used to create 3D games.

The ACT file can include movements of objects, skins and materials.

ACT or Actor files can be created directly, either in Genesis3D, or by converting other 3D formats to ACT using Genesis3D Actor Studio.

FoxPro

In this use, the ACT file shows the hierarchical relationships within the code of a FoxPro application.

Visual FoxPro was a data-centric, procedural-oriented programming language from Microsoft that later became object-oriented.

In this case, the ACT file organizes the hierarchies of the declared procedures within the code.

ADPCM Compressed Audio File

In this case, the ACT file is an audio format recorded by some voice recorders and MP3 players.

Said ACT file is compressed using Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation, hence the acronym ADCPM.
