A 12M extension and format file is a spreadsheet created by Lotus 1-2-3, which is part of IBM Lotus SmartSuite.

Lotus SmartSuite is an office suite from IBM, whose last version released was 9.8.6, which mainly integrates Lotus Organizer as an electronic agenda, Lotus 1-2-3, which is a spreadsheet, which we are dealing with at this moment, Lotus Word Pro, as a word processor, Lotus Approach, which is a database management system, and Freelance Graphics, which functions as a presentation program.

As expected, Lotus SmartSuite ran in a DOS environment and was later ported to early versions of Windows.

Lotus 1-2-3 was very popular in the 80's and 90's.

However, it was surpassed by Microsoft Excel in the 1990s and was officially discontinued in 2013.

The 12M file contains a pre-designed spreadsheet for financial use, which allows the user to enter information to create forecasts, financial statements, and budgets.

12M files also include printing formulas, formats, and ranges.

The '1-2-3' in Lotus refers to the three main capabilities of the program: 1) spreadsheet functions, 2) table and graph creation, and 3) basic database operations.
